We are constantly on the move, going from meeting to meeting, task to task and inevitably from year to year. We assume we will improve, but how can we maximize the progress each year, ie are we compounding or is our growth marginal? How do we know that the learning is shared across the team and not just the usual individuals?

One of the simple ways to solve this is by setting up time to discuss and document this as a team. If done properly, it should maximize the chances of success and avoid repetition of negative patterns.

Step 1: Share these questions with your team members to have them fill in their inputs independently. It will be interesting to see how differently each person views the same work.

Step 2: Meet as a team to discuss and close with top 5 critical items in each section

Step 3: Appoint 1–2 people who will bring this up in team reviews going forward to ensure accountability (ie are we just talk or actually acting upon it)

Question 1: What did we Accomplish? Share a list of key projects along with the outcomes / impact

Question 2: What did we do Well? Can be a mix of projects, outcomes, practices, approaches

Question 3: Where did we Screw up? What goals did we drop the ball on, what were the reasons, what corrective measures were taken

Question 4: What can we do differently in the new year? What projects, approaches can we initiate (or) modify to create a bigger impact

Setting goals is easy, conducting timely, deep reviews and following up on action items consistently to closure is hard. Choose hard.
